Root cause, 2023

Progress and the exploration of the world primarily rely on an analytical approach, one that is often devoid of feelings, empathy, and reflection. These elements are considered weaknesses in this context because they might slow down progress. I believe this approach has largely shaped a consumeristic attitude, or even an adversarial relationship with nature to some extent.

I think that art tools allow for a different approach to understanding this world—one rooted in contemplation, empathy, and reflection. It’s about seeking an answer to the question of harmonious coexistence rather than positioning ourselves against nature.

In my project, I explored the forest environment using this approach. I found objects in the forest that had been damaged, either by natural forces or by human activity. Fallen trees, broken trunks, and exposed roots—these are wounds of the landscape. In natural light, they appear as ordinary, unremarkable scenes.

Using a flash, I illuminated these wounds, making them more visible and bringing them into focus. This way, I engaged with the space by introducing a different type of light—artificial light—and captured it on camera.
